dormant
sometimes people like plants
need to retreat
so they can survive a lack of light
or heat.
those in dormancy
the world sees
as withdrawn.
when really, they’re welcoming
their own company,
moving through space
more intentionally
conserving energy—
creatively.
as creatures of the earth,
are we above living in season?
do we dare let the surface die,
watching old limbs lie
cadavered in the cold?
i love growing old,
shedding yester-year’s skin.
don’t rush my retreat!
for fallowed fallopian roots
are readying themselves in rest.
so hush now—
follow nature underground
to see what life there
can be found.
